Dr. Vaughan graduated from the University of Kentucky with high distinction. He earned his medical degree from the University of Louisville, where he also completed his orthopedic surgery residency. He received the Kuntscher Award for Excellence in Resident Teaching and was Administrative Chief Resident in his final year of residency training. Dr. Vaughan completed a spine surgery fellowship at the Minnesota Spine Center in Minneapolis under Dr. Robert Winter and Dr. John Lonstein.

Dr. Vaughan is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, the Scoliosis Research Society and the Kentucky Orthopaedic Society. Dr. Vaughan has served as president of the Kentucky Orthopaedic Society and the Bluegrass Orthopaedic Society and Chief of Staff at Samaritan Hospital.

Dr. Vaughan has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals including Spine, Clinical Orthopaedic and Related Research and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He has been a speaker at numerous regional, national and international meetings.

Dr. Vaughan specializes in the operative and non-operative treatment of the spine and general orthopedics.

G. Chris Stephens, MD

A native Kentuckian from Floyd County, Dr. Stephens graduated from Transylvania University in Lexington, where he was valedictorian of his graduating class. He earned his medical degree at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and also completed his internship and his orthopedic residency at Vanderbilt. Dr. Stephens completed a spine surgery fellowship with Dr. Henry Bohlman, a world-renowned spine surgeon, at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He was assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine before joining the Kentucky Spine Institute. 

Dr. Stephens has been a practicing spinal surgeon in Lexington since 1994. Dr. Stephens is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He has presented many talks at local, regional, national and international meetings.

Dr. Stephens also has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Spine, the Journal of Clinical Pathology, the Journal of Surgical Oncology, and the Journal of Spinal Disorders. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Stephens specializes in the treatment of degenerative conditions, tumors, and fractures of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine.
Thomas E. Menke, MD

Thomas E. Menke, MD

A native of Covington, Kentucky, Dr. Menke graduated summa cum laude from St. Louis University. He competed as a member of the varsity swim team, while at St. Louis University. He was awarded Academic All-America honors in swimming his junior and senior years. Dr. Menke earned his medical degree with high distinction at the University of Kentucky, where he also completed his internship and his orthopedic surgery residency. He completed a one year fellowship in spinal surgery at the Kentucky Spine Institute.
         
Dr. Menke is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, the Kentucky Medical Association, and the Kentucky Orthopaedic Society.

Dr. Menke has continued his education by completing courses in innovative spinal surgery techniques and has presented talks at local and national meetings.

Dr. Menke has served as President of the Bluegrass Orthopaedic Society (2000-2003), Chief of Surgery at Samaritan Hospital (2002-2003), and Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Central Baptist Hospital (2010-2012).

Dr. Menke specializes in the operative and non-operative care of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine.

The physicians at the Kentucky Spine Institute have published numerous research articles on spinal disorders in peer reviewed journals and have hosted several regional and national spine surgery seminars.
